Research skills: introduction to systematic reviews

This course introduces practitioners to the potential for systematic reviews to map the current landscape of published evidence for arts therapies.

What are systematic reviews?

Systematic reviews are considered to be one of the strongest forms of scientific evidence. They are literature reviews conducted to rigorous standards, meaning that the current available evidence on a topic is compiled and summarised.

This training will help you to understand what systematic reviews are, so that you can read them with a more critical eye.

What you will learn

The course will give you an overview of different types of systematic reviews and how they can be used to consolidate a disparate evidence base. It will support you by outlining best practice and offer tools to support you to conduct your own systematic review.

The tutors will also share their experiences, including lessons learned and top tips! The course will include:

  • What are systematic reviews?
  • Developing a protocol, the template to guide your systematic review
  • Key stages in the methodology
  • Assembling your review team
  • Critical skills in how to assess the quality and trustworthiness
  • Synthesis or making sense of your data
  • Publishing and disseminating your work
  • Signposting to further resources

How you will learn

Learning will be through presentations, exploring several reviews relevant to arts therapies, activities to develop critical skills and discussion groups.
